...well some of you know I've been playing. I went in with a neutral intention and honestly the game's visuals were 'ugly' (not bad, just ugly) to me. Now that I've played it thoroughly, I can say this game truly satisfies me. This is something I have not experienced in any game for a long time, so I think I'm going to be sticking to this one. My main character's over 60 and I love the mechanical challenge in perfecting the character.
I'm still curious to try out Sacred 3 though.
D3, meh, PoE feels better for me at this point but I'd still give it a shot if I feel like actually putting the money to buy the new xpac etc OR buy new outfits for my PoE toon (I mean come on)
I've not played since before the official launch, but I'll pick it up again and see how it's changed. I can post my information when I get home. Do you play hardcore or races, or just stick to normal?
I tried it for like an hour.. but the only feel that I got was a poor imitation of Diablo with worse implication of mechanics. It's more broad.. but it is actually so much that it becomes too much.
Choice is good, people like customization. But there is a point where you can give a player too much choice.. It becomes an impossible learning curve. And if there is one thing I hate about a game it is when I can't figure it out completely.
I have this nearly OCD kinda thing where I just need to know a game 100% before I can enjoy it. With PoE that is impossible, hence.. i rather keep my distance.

Not sure if I know you but if I don't...Hi! I'm Mace.
I agree with some of this. I mean it's obviously an imitation of Diablo and feels closer to D2 than D3, which I like. It's broad for sure.
There's a ton of choice in theory but at least pre-expansion it seemed to all boil down to like 2-3 main builds for each class like every other game does, which really just made it have more illusion of choice than actual choice.
My biggest beef back then (and I don't know if it's still the case) is that every character really felt the same. They all did the same things, just some did it better than others. There was no feeling of character identity at all since everyone uses the same skills as a base. Plus it was just so ugly and played so clunky. Don't know if it's still the case but those were my big turn-offs.
@ Krom
My first run / figuring out mechanics, so I'm doing normal. I'm making my character slightly different from the cookie cutter and it's working pretty well.
@ Mace
My thoughts when I first started, but the more I played, the obvious fact that this is simply a great game surfaced to me. Mechanically, it does what it's supposed to do and for that aspect - it's perfect. Now, we complain about 'looks' but the game can look very badass - all you have to do is... well, micotransactions. I don't fault them for that, however. It takes money to keep these things stable so that is fair.
@ Evo
Okay, it's not an imitation of Diablo. Diablo is NOT the first ARPG nor did it start the whole genre. It's simply a well known product because of the fat cow producer; Blizzard. The learning curve for perfection of your character at an absolute top tier level is seriously high - and I loooooooove that. Min / Maxing, science aspect is *my* thing, so I go with that well. However, there are cookie-cutters and other builds figured out by people that you can use (There are a TON of builds out there) You don't have to reinvent the wheel or make what is, better. That's my role!

Every character is not the same... at all. I've seen so many variants of my class for example + the ridiculousness of whatever you wish to make up can come about. Clunkiness, I think, may be a low level issue? I thought that for my witch or with certain spells, but now that I've figured our the proper setup for my Scion - she simply flows (including the anims etc)

For me, Diablo is by far the best game in its genre that I know of.
I didn't imply it was the first one, but to me.. definitely the best one.
As of the builds.. I'm all for new trees, innovation.. but this.. there is no way to figure it all out. Yet I want to. I need to before I can enjoy the game. But there will never be.. It's too much for any normal human being to process.
I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to min/max in that game. Like... there are so many variables compared to other games, even MMOs. The skill tree is enormous, not to mention the gems etc. The level of customization for stats is more than any other game I've seen.

So use one of the many builds out there lol. No need to hurt your head over it

Then I wouldn't be playing to game to it's limits. And I won't figure it out.

How? Others have figured out 'sweet' spots or min/maxed spots. You say you don't wanna hurt your head so just use one of those and come have fun! Or do a combo of both, use a build and perfect it? Anyway, I guess it's not a game for everyone but for me, I love this shit too much.

Yeah that's why I said it was all true pre-expansion, might be different now. Even at high end it felt the way I described before. Certain classes did "feel" better than others at lower levels for sure, though. The Witch felt effing horrible, templar slightly less so, Duelist felt very smooth, etc.
Like I said I'd be willing to give it a shot again, always meant to after the xpac came out.

Yeah but that's what makes it fun right? I mean it's really the only truly shining quality of the game - if you're not about that type of thing might as well play Diablo or Torchlight 2.
Every class I've seen from diff players all seem to have diff strengths / talents etc.,
I guess when you played, people didn't figure out as much? Possible too, the trees can be complex
I've inspected the talent tree thoroughly, and honestly everytime you have to make a choice this it what it feels like for me:
Option 1; What you like, seems cool, useful. Option 2; Boring, most effective, nobrainer taker.
It just puts me off so bad..
That's not the case for me. All my options have been fun / effective, but I can understand what you mean - wanting to play the way you WANT and having to adjust. Isn't it so for any difficulty? To adapt

Honestly it is fun to me to make my character the best they can possibly be. It just seems almost insurmountable in a way. Like, the gigantic skill tree aside, some things like the gems aren't even raw numbers. The amount of testing you would have to do...It would take such an amount of time I think, but I suppose that's the draw.

I think things got rebalanced quite a bit along the way. Like as a Witch before you either played crit cold or you sucked, basically.

That's just it, i want to take option A.. But the game more or less "forces" me upon option B.
It's like a slap in the face for wanting to play your own way.

I know it sucks if you're a min-maxer, but my advice would be to do a playthrough with a class and just take whatever looks fun. It doesn't take that long to play through again and the first time through really is more about just feeling stuff out. If that's something you don't think you can do because it would just be intolerable I totally get that though.

Yeah it's really the only draw to the game imo. Other games look and feel better and are better as hack'n'slashes.
Hmm well, I haven't played enough hack and slash games to be an expert but I have played a couple. Diablo 2 and TL2 both bored me, but for some reason I can get into a rhythm on PoE and have fun with it. The gameplay itself is chill and I enjoy it.

This is the thing I love about the game the most. Finished a stressful work shift? Here, have some Path and just ccccchhhhhhhiiiiillllllllllll
the chillness is what i enjoy the most
this is truly something you can hang back with friends

Like someone said above, haven't played since official launch.
Used to just be Path of Health Nodes. Stack HP and win....
Have both a 88 Ranger (LA/Split using Dart Rain or w/e that super quick bow is called) and a 80ish CI dual dagger shadow build.
I found it overly boring and super repetitive once you actually figure out what to do. You just spam run the same zones until you get maps.....that you spam run......to get items......to trade for....more items.....
Still don't think they have put out a PvP for it. Not crazy into the season thing they do with the NPCs or w/e
That being said, ill goof off with ya or something sometime/give you shit
I couldn't feel the "chill" part whatsoever in all honesty.
I mean it's not a hard game in the sense of execution.. but you can't even walk away for a minute and come back or you will be utterly destroyed.. Even if you had cleared the place before.
If I were to simply lay back and let it all go.. I'd probably sooner grab a car game that doesn't involve any competativeness.

There's PvP but it's not a PvP focused game, just something to chill
It seems like you're going into it with the wrong mindset for the kind of game it is.
Endgame isn't the point. It's not all some race to get to the end to get to the 'good part' of the game like MMOs are. ARPGs are more about building the character and the process. There's no point in mathing out the very best build. The fun is finding a playstyle that you like and making that work for you.
For instance, if you want to be a frost mage, you can do that. If you want to be a strength based archer, you can do that too.
The fun for me is thinking of something completely stupid and trying to make it work. I've got a guy that doesn't do any damage by himself directly but can summon a bunch of totems and auras. It's stupid, but it's fun in a way. I've also got an archer with strict physical damage that's got a bunch of mobility but is instagibbed if you fuck up.
It's also hard to math this game because gear isn't just about stats; you've gotta get the right slots and links to properly augment your abilities. And that's what I like about it. You might like it more if you go into it with a different mindset.

I know what you're trying to say. But it just doesn't apply to me. I don't work that way, I can't.
