This is why you are no longer named Chocolatethunda. Also, great posts Mace. Somehow they always manage to grow into something big and informative :P.

First off, welcome!
Secondly, you might want to list what class you are :P
Luckily I am in the process of making a comprehensive PvP Guardian tanking guide and video which will cover everything from gear to rotation to play styles and theoretical situations. Anyways, if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask me and I'll be glad to help, or I'll find someone who will be able to help you (depending on your class). Thanks!

Guardians (Guardian tanks in particular) are so wide-open on talent specs and gearing that it's a hugely open-ended question. I'm of the opinion that you should really base these things around the group you're with and have the gear and familiarity with specs to be able to accomodate that. Not everyone has that kind of time or gear though, so you can pretty easily fall into a 'go-to' spec and gear and just adapt from there.

Ladispute has performed the tank role much more than I have, but the basic gist is you're going to get Unremitting from the Vigilance tree no matter what, get ~16 points in Defense, and decide just how far up Defense and Vigilance you want to go after that.

A good base to start from would be:

http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#500RrGbzzZZfMd0M.2

This puts you at 16 in Defense and 12 in Vigilance. Where you go from here is almost entirely up to you and your preferences. You can go as far as 25 points in Vigilance and end up with:

http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#500RrGbzzZZfRr0rhdzM.2

Which nets you a nice go-to focus burner attack in Overhead Slash, a very high crit chance on Blade Storm and Dispatch afterwards, a free Force Sweep, 15% Damage Reduction when using Focused Defense, 45s cooldown Awe, and 4% base damage reduction. A very solid balance of defense and offense in this spec, though not a ton of utility.

You could choose to go as high as 28 or 29 in Defense, and end up with:

http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#500RrGduzrdbZZfMd0M.2

Which nets you blade barrier for a bit of damage absorb after Blade Storm, higher shield and defense chance, 5 second longer Enure, 4% extra internal/elemental damage reduction, Hilt Strike (4s stun on a 60s cooldown, giving you two great stuns every minute), 45s cooldown force push, and a dash of extra damage on force sweep. A very defensive spec with a large amount of very sold control - you can lock down 3-4 players for extended periods of time with this spec. Substantially lower damage, however.

You can also pick and choose and go somewhere between those two extremes, as long as you pick up the basics outlined in the 16/12 spec. Everything beyond those 28 points is totally preference as far as I'm concerned, and like I said, best based on group makeup.

As for gear, there's a ton of debate out there over tank vs. dps gear. Again, I think this is best determined by the role you're going to play in a group. If you're going to be tied to a healer all game every game and responsible for holding a node for a substantial amount of time, go for all tank gear. It does make a large difference in survivability, regardless of what many might tell you.

No matter how you gear, you're best off getting the 2 piece set bonus from the Vindicator's Set (8% self-heal on Guardian Leap) and the 2 piece set bonus from the War Leader's Set (1s extra on Force Stasis, which isn't channeled with these specs). Both of these set bonuses are amazing for a tank Guardian and shouldn't be missed. If you want all DPS gear, just re-mod the War Leader's pieces and vice-versa if you want all tank gear. I would advocate a shield generator (BM one is better than War Hero, in my opinion) regardless of what you choose.

There's a ton of room to play with Guardian gear, and you can even do things like pick up all tank pieces and just use all DPS augments to pick up a little extra damage, or vice-versa. You can use half DPS gear and half tank gear if you think you need a little extra survivability from your DPS set or a little extra damage from your tank set.

This is one of the things I love best about Guardians, there's rarely a 'best' answer to anything. There isn't a 'best' spec, no 'best' gearing options, there are just options and tinkering until you get something that fits right.

This turned into a huge post...somehow.

 lol sorry breh.

As for stats, get endurance everywhere you can. Shield, absorb, defense are all just going to show up, and they're not 'bad' like you'll often hear. Most of the highest damage specs in the game do a good portion of damage which can be defended with these stats.

As far as I know there is no real rotation, just using the abilities that are most appropriate for the situation. Blade storm pretty much every time it's up, lots of sunders, force sweeps to stack sunders, and all of your utility skills. Keep taunt and challenging call on cooldown all the time. Ladispute knows the ins and outs of playing that spec much better than I do.

Sorry! Was on my phone earlier and just clicked on the topic link from the Chat Box so didn't see this was posted in the Guardian forums, hence why I asked you to state your class lolololoololol so bad.
Anyways, finally going to start my guide tonight. Might take a couple of days to finish up just cause I want to make it really in depth and make sure I hit all the points fully. Also, need some time to record new footage for the video guide that will go along with it.
However, Mace basically covered all the points.
http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#500RrG0ukrdbZMZfMd0M.2
Would be my build of choice if you were going the controlling tank role, which I am.
Basically, if you're the only tank use that build, but if you have multiple tanks or multiple semi-defensive classes then you might want to go with the Vigilance/Defense build Mace posted. Really depends on what your team needs.

You are responsible for your team's healers! You need to be with them at all times. Guardian Leap should always be on cool down, you should always have your taunts up on targets that are harassing your heals, and you should constantly be CCing them to give your heals some breathing room. It takes practice, but when done right you can make sure your heals are up for the entire game and if that's the case there's no way your team is losing the game. Like Mace said, rotation is pretty loose. It'll all depend on the other team, whether or not they're constantly pressuring your heals or if you can get in the fight and do some dps. Basically just whittle down the dps that are on your heals with Sunder Strike, Master Strike and Slash and then use CCs when your heals are getting really pressured to help them out. Make sure to use Force Leap as a semi-CC too since rooting a melee dps in place will allow your heals to run out of range and not take damage - almost like a full stun.

Well, those are some of the basics of PvP tanking. I'll get into more of the specifics in my guide so check back in the next few days for that. Until then have fun and get those Protection points!!!!!!

Nice post, Glass.

Hardest thing to get into your brain is that if you go that route, you are NOT to be worrying about doing damage. If you see someone at sub-30%, throw a Dispatch, but otherwise every ability you're using should have a real defensive purpose behind it. That's tough for me to adjust to at first.

You don't know me, but I play a Guardian Tank (up to unremitting then all defense) as a result of nothing other than watching your streams. Not only is it incredibly effective, but slowing then force pushing PTs of the cliff in Novare Coast is just about the coolest thing ever. It's a long slow walk back to the fight...

So, there's two people that have shown an interest!

Welcome, Mylex!

Thanks, man, that's good to hear and I'm glad you're enjoying yourself! Like I said in another post I'm working on a really, really in depth Defensive Guardian guide that should be out shortly. It'll cover your role in groups, specs, gear questions, when and how to use certain moves, and hopefully include some videos showing all the written theory in action, so be on the look out for that!

Haha geeze I haven't streamed in soooo long. Basically had to stop because the server just died out and it wouldn't be fun for people to be watching me hop around fleet waiting for queues for 90% of the time. Unfortunately Twitch erased most of my recorded videos so can't even send people to that for advice :/ However, I do plan on streaming again pretty soon! I just started a new job so working out my hours on that and then we're also trying to recruit a couple more heals so we can get a group going a lot more consistently. Then there's the dilemma of our competition listening in, watching old videos to find out strats and ghosting my stream to see where we have people positioned in WZs :( prob will have to mute the stream during WZs, or at least my teammates voices, and then not sure exactly what to do about the recordings. Will have to ask the guild what they feel comfortable with. Anyways, will try to get that going as soon as I can and will definitely let you know.

Thanks again! Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Glad to hear you're going to potentially stream again. Yours was the best that I have seen, partially because I have a soft spot for Guardians and partially because your explanations were excellent and suddenly clicked something that I had felt but not quite been able to put my finger on previously - that a defense spec and geared guardian could be a real asset to any team (and not just in Huttball.)

There are 2 of your videos still up and I refer back to them quite a lot. I'm not a guy with any previous pvp experience in other games, so seeing similar situations helps me to not panic when they arise in my own WZs. I just take a breath, and look for opportunities to "attack."

In this sense, "attack" means stun something, taunt something, use awe, spam slow, push, root, switch guard etc. Some opportunity to make use of the various tools a defense guardian has to assist my team/mitigate the other team.

In the past, I think I would have just popped all my CDs at once and run round like a soon-to-be-dead idiot. Watching your stream really accelerated my learning and made this game a lot more fun.

Anyway, I'll stop there cos if I carry on typing like this, people will think I'm about to ask you out to dinner.

Which I'm not. Just start streaming again mate :)

Haha well I'm glad what I had to say helped out. The game play in rateds is pretty different though and a lot more exciting so I hope to be able to showcase some of that in my guide or when I start streaming. We're talking an average of 250k+ protection with multiple 500k+ :P good stuff! Anyways, glad to have you here on the site and again if you ever have any questions feel free to ask. This has definitely inspired me to complete my guide, so shouldn't be too much longer until it's done.

ALL GAME EVERY GAME!
The guide will come with videos so you will be able to see me doing everything from my perspective, which should help you be able to replicate it. Been working on the written part all night though, and I'm looking at a Sunday release. That'll give me enough time to finish this up in between my work schedule and then get some more footage for the videos.
